Overview
Black Myth: Wukong is an action-RPG developed by the Chinese independent studio Game Science, released in 2024 on PC and PS5. The game draws on the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West: you play as the Destined One, a monkey armed with a staff, who sets off on a journey through a mythological China. The adventure is split into six chapters.
Gameplay
The gameplay is smooth. Combat is mostly done with the staff, with light and heavy attacks and dodges, backed up by spells such as Immobilize or transformations. You heal with a gourd and rest at shrines, which act as checkpoints.
For someone not used to souls-likes or fast-paced action games like this one, the difficulty is more than approachable. It does ask for a bit of discipline at first, though, while you get to grips with the various mechanics.
It is also a game that rewards exploration well, with optional bosses and/or gear.
Verdict
The game looks good, the gameplay is smooth and exploration is well rewarded.
The one complaint I would make is the last chapter, chapter 6: it feels rushed. You end up in front of , the points of interest are impossible to find without a map, and you have no idea how to move the story forward, find the bosses and so on.
