Overview
Evoland Legendary Edition is a compilation bundling Evoland (2013) and Evoland 2: A Slight Case of Spacetime Continuum Disorder (2015), two action-RPGs developed and published by the French studio Shiro Games. It is a love letter to Zelda and Final Fantasy, packed with nods to both.
Gameplay
The concept is excellent: the game evolves graphically and mechanically as you progress. In the first Evoland, you open chests that gradually unlock new elements (colours, screen scrolling, combat, and so on), which takes you from monochrome 2D to 3D. Evoland 2 builds on the idea by sending the player across several eras, each with its own art style, and by switching between game genres.
Verdict
The idea runs out of steam a little over time, but the journey is clearly worth it.
