Overview
Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! is a role-playing game, a reimagining of Pokémon Yellow, developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo, released in 2018. I played it on Nintendo Switch.
Story and world
The game revisits the Kanto region and the story of Pokémon Yellow: you set off on an adventure with a Pikachu as your partner, take on the eight Gym Leaders and cross paths with Team Rocket, including Jessie and James.
It is a nice little return to the roots, with the original 151 Pokémon and their Alolan forms.
Gameplay
The game borrows a bit of the Pokémon GO system for catching Pokémon: you no longer battle them in the wild, you throw Poké Balls directly with a motion of the controller. Wild Pokémon are visible in the environment, and battles against trainers remain turn-based, as in the classic games.
You can also play in two-player co-op, and transfer Pokémon from Pokémon GO.
Graphics and music
The game is quite pretty, with a colourful 3D version of Kanto. Pokémon can follow the hero around the environment, and some can even be ridden.
Verdict
The game is nice, but nothing more. The little return to the roots and the Pokémon GO-inspired catching system are fun, and the game is quite pretty, but overall it is fun and nothing more.
