Overview

Catherine is a puzzle-platformer developed by Atlus, originally released in 2011 on PS3 and Xbox 360. Catherine Classic is the PC version of the game, released in 2019.

Story and world

You follow Vincent, an indecisive thirty-something caught between Katherine, his girlfriend, and Catherine, his mistress, who starts having strange nightmares every night.

The basic premise sounds fairly ordinary, but the game has quite a few plot twists.

Gameplay

The game alternates between two phases. In the evening, you spend time at the Stray Sheep bar, chatting with the other customers and replying to your text messages. At night, in the nightmares, you have to climb a tower of blocks by pushing and pulling them to make a path, before the bottom of the tower collapses.

The gameplay is easy enough to pick up. There are some significant choices to make that change the ending of the game: Vincent's answers move a gauge that steers you towards one of the different endings.

Verdict

A story with quite a few plot twists and gameplay that is easy to pick up. That said, I imagine the mature, adult side of it could put some people off.
