Overview

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age is a JRPG developed and published by Square Enix. It came out in 2017 in Japan, then in 2018 in the West on PS4 and PC. As with the rest of the series, the character design is by Akira Toriyama and the music by Koichi Sugiyama.

Story and world

You play as a young man raised in a small village who learns, on his coming-of-age day, that he is the reincarnation of a legendary hero, and sets off to meet the king to find out more.

The world is vast and colourful, and the companions you meet along the way are endearing from start to finish.

Gameplay

It is an extremely classic JRPG in its structure: you explore the world, go through towns and dungeons, and battles are turn-based. Monsters are visible on the map, and each character progresses through a skill grid.

Graphics and music

The world is very colourful, and the soundtrack is memorable.

Verdict

A very classic JRPG, with nothing revolutionary, but executed almost perfectly. It is probably one of the best entry points into the genre.
