Overview
Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles is the remastered version of Final Fantasy Tactics, developed and published by Square Enix and released in 2025. The original game, directed by Yasumi Matsuno, came out in 1997 on PlayStation. It is the return of a tactical-RPG landmark, with a new translation and full voice acting.
Story and world
You follow Ramza Beoulve, the younger son of a great noble family, in a kingdom of Ivalice scarred by war and by power struggles between factions.
Ivalice's political plot remains unusually dense.
Gameplay
Battles take place on grid-based maps, where each unit moves and acts in turn, and where terrain and height matter. The job system lets you develop each unit across different classes and combine the abilities learned in each of them, which allows for enormous build depth.
Verdict
Demanding, sometimes punishing, but it remains a benchmark for the genre.
