Overview
Final Fantasy XIII-2 is a JRPG developed and published by Square Enix, the direct sequel to Final Fantasy XIII. It came out in 2011 in Japan and in 2012 in Europe on PS3 and Xbox 360, then on PC, where I played it.
Story and world
You follow Serah, Lightning's sister, and Noel, a young man from the future. Together they travel across different eras to fix time paradoxes.
The story, on the other hand, becomes frankly confusing under the weight of its paradoxes.
Gameplay
It is a sequel that fixes most of the criticisms aimed at the first one. The structure is more open: instead of one long corridor, you choose which places and eras to visit from a kind of timeline map, and you can go back.
The combat system keeps XIII's roles and Paradigms, with one new feature: monster recruiting. Defeated enemies can join the party and take the third slot in the group, each with its own role.
Verdict
More enjoyable to play than Final Fantasy XIII thanks to a more open structure, time travel and monster recruiting, but less memorable, because of a story that gets tangled up in its paradoxes.
