Overview

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is a hack and slash action game developed by Koei Tecmo and published by Nintendo, released in 2020. It's set 100 years before Breath of the Wild. I played it on Nintendo Switch.

The game is fun. I like its musou side, having played Dynasty Warriors back in the PS2 days.

Story and world

You're dropped into an alternate timeline, before the events of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

You follow Zelda, Link and the four Champions (Mipha, Daruk, Revali and Urbosa) as they prepare to face Calamity Ganon, the ancient threat about to return to Hyrule.

Gameplay

As in any musou, you take on hordes of enemies with combos, with many playable characters who each have their own fighting style. You also get the Sheikah Slate powers from Breath of the Wild (bombs, ice, magnetism, etc.), which you can use in battle.

The game can also be played with two players, in split screen.

Graphics and music

The game reuses the art direction of Breath of the Wild.

One of the downsides is the framerate drops: it can sometimes fall to 10 FPS, especially in two-player mode. You can tell the game and the Switch struggle to display so many enemies on screen.

Verdict

A fun game that will appeal to anyone who likes the musou side of Dynasty Warriors. Too bad the framerate drops so much, especially with two players.
