Overview

Mario & Luigi: Brothership is a role-playing game developed by Acquire and published by Nintendo, released in 2024. I played it on Nintendo Switch.

I'm a big fan of the Mario & Luigi series, which combines a turn-based system with dynamic battles where you can dodge attacks. I've been playing it since the GBA entries!

It's the first entry in the series since the closure of AlphaDream, the studio behind the previous games.

Story and world

Mario and Luigi are transported to the world of Concordia, once united but now broken apart into a multitude of islands. Aboard an island ship, they travel from island to island to connect them and restore the unity of this world.

The game takes a while to get going, and it felt a bit long and repetitive towards the end.

Gameplay

The gameplay and level design are as good as ever. There are original Bros. Attacks, not to mention Luigi Logic, which brings something new to this game: at certain moments, in exploration as well as in battle, Luigi comes up with an unexpected solution.

The game also introduces Battle Plugs to equip, which add effects in battle.

Graphics and music

The game moves to 3D, with a colourful cel-shaded style and characters with bold outlines.

Verdict

An entry that stays true to what I love about the series: gameplay and level design as good as ever, original Bros. Attacks and Luigi Logic as the new addition. Shame that it takes a while to get going and becomes a bit long and repetitive towards the end.
