Overview
Super Mario RPG is a role-playing game, a remake of the 1996 Super Nintendo game, developed by ArtePiazza and published by Nintendo, released in 2023. I played it on Nintendo Switch.
Not having played the original game, I wondered whether it would be enjoyable, and in the end it was a lot of fun!
Story and world
While Mario is fighting Bowser to rescue Peach, a giant sword crashes into Bowser's castle and shatters the Star Road, which grants wishes. Mario must find the seven Star Pieces scattered across the kingdom to repair it.
I really liked the trio of Mario, Bowser and Peach, along with the two other characters, Mallow and Geno, who join the party.
Gameplay
Battles are turn-based, but you can press the button at the right moment during an attack or a defence to increase the damage dealt or reduce the damage taken. The remake adds combined attacks between the three party members.
The game is fairly short, but I wasn't bored while playing it!
Graphics and music
The remake completely rebuilds the graphics in 3D, in a style close to the original. Yoko Shimomura's soundtrack has been rearranged, and you can switch back to the original music in the options.
Verdict
A very pleasant surprise for someone who hasn't played the original. The adventure is fairly short, but I was never bored, and I really liked the trio of Mario, Bowser and Peach with Mallow and Geno.
