Overview

Kirby Star Allies is a platformer developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo, released in 2018. I played it on Nintendo Switch.

Story and world

Evil hearts scatter across the galaxy and fall on Planet Popstar, where they take control of its inhabitants, including King Dedede. Kirby sets off to investigate where they came from.

Gameplay

The big new feature is the ability to throw hearts at enemies to turn them into allies. You can have up to three companions, and combine their powers with Kirby's (for example, setting a sword on fire).

The game is really nice, but I find it a real shame that in multiplayer, the other players can't play as Kirby: they only control one of those enemies turned allies.

The game is fairly quick to finish.

Graphics and music

The game is beautiful. It keeps the series' colourful, rounded style, in high definition.

Verdict

It's no revolution for the series, but the game is beautiful and nice to play through. Shame that multiplayer doesn't let the other players play as Kirby.
