Overview
Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore is a role-playing game crossing over Fire Emblem and Shin Megami Tensei, developed by Atlus and published by Nintendo, released in 2020. I played it on Nintendo Switch. It's an enhanced version of the game released in 2015 on Wii U.
Since I like the Fire Emblem and Persona series, I really enjoyed this JRPG.
Story and world
The story takes place in modern-day Tokyo, in the world of the entertainment industry. Creatures from another world, the Mirages, attack humans to steal their Performa, their creative energy. Itsuki Aoi and his friend Tsubasa Oribe, who dreams of becoming an idol, team up with benevolent Mirages, inspired by Fire Emblem heroes, to fight them.
The story is decent in terms of plot, nothing more.
Gameplay
Battles are turn-based, in the vein of Shin Megami Tensei and Persona: you exploit enemy weaknesses to trigger Sessions, chains of attacks between party members. Exploration takes place in dungeons, the Idolaspheres.
The game has very good longevity and a nicely gradual difficulty curve.
Graphics and music
The graphics are decent, nothing more. However, there are superb, very polished cutscenes, especially during the characters' musical performances, which showcase the game's J-pop songs.
Verdict
A good JRPG, with very good longevity and a nicely gradual difficulty curve. The story and graphics are decent, nothing more, but the cutscenes are superb. It's a good game.
