Overview
New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe is a 2D platformer developed by Nintendo and published by Nintendo, released in 2019. I played it on Nintendo Switch.
I did not play the Wii U version, and from reading some reviews, I get the impression that this is just a simple port.
Story and world
Bowser and his kids attack Peach's castle and launch Mario far away. Mario has to cross the kingdom to get back to the castle and save the princess.
The game also includes New Super Luigi U, an expansion with shorter, harder levels, centred on Luigi.
Gameplay
You get the classic formula of the New Super Mario Bros. series: 2D levels spread across a single seamless world map, with power-ups like the Super Acorn's flying squirrel suit.
Up to four players can play together in local co-op. This version adds Toadette as a playable character, along with the Super Crown, which gives her Peach's appearance. Nabbit, who is invulnerable to enemies, serves as a more accessible option for beginners.
Graphics and music
The game keeps the art direction of the original Wii U version, in high definition, with colourful scenery and a few levels inspired by paintings.
Verdict
The game is nice, nothing more. It feels like a simple port of the Wii U version, with the New Super Luigi U expansion as a bonus and a few additions like Toadette.
