Overview
SpeedRunners is a 2D platform racing game developed by DoubleDutch Games and published by tinyBuild. After a period in early access, its full version came out in 2016. It's a multiplayer party game for up to four players, locally or online.
Gameplay
The idea: all players run the same course and share the same screen, which follows the player in the lead. The last of the group is knocked out as soon as they fall off the screen, and the round goes on until only one runner is left. So you need to be fast, but above all you must never fall behind.
To get around, you have a grappling hook that lets you latch onto ceilings to swing and pick up speed, as well as items to grab along the course to hinder your opponents. The grappling hook and the items make matches very tense, especially locally, when everyone is in the same room.
On the other hand, solo content is thin: SpeedRunners really is a game to play with other people.
Verdict
A 2D platform race that's easy to understand, where the grappling hook and the items make matches very tense, especially locally. Not much solo content — it really is a game to play with other people.
