Overview

A Hat in Time is a 3D platformer developed by the independent studio Gears for Breakfast, released in 2017 on PC. It is a "collectathon" platformer in the vein of the 3D games of the Nintendo 64 era: you explore levels to gather collectibles.

Having played this game a very long time ago, I am going on memory here.

Story and world

You play as Hat Kid, a little girl travelling through space aboard her ship. The Time Pieces, hourglasses that power her ship, fall onto a planet, and she has to go and recover them by travelling through several worlds.

Gameplay

It really is a responsive, fun and refreshing platformer. The game is split into chapters, and every level brings something extra.

There are several hats to get, which you craft with balls of yarn picked up in the levels, and each hat grants different powers: for example one hat to sprint, or another to throw explosive potions.

I played it in local co-op, two players on the same screen.

The game is over fairly quickly, but I would rather have a short game than one whose length is padded for no reason.

Graphics and music

Overall the game looks good: its "cartoon" style has aged well.

Verdict

To sum up, I recommend this one without hesitation for a cosy little co-op session.
